Liverpool have signed 18-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans from Genk in a deal that could be worth up to £30 million, including potential add-ons. Brughmans has signed a six-year contract with the English club but will stay with Genk for the current season on loan before joining Liverpool ahead of the 2027-28 campaign. Standing at 6ft 7in, Brughmans has already started all four of Genk’s games this season and has represented Belgium at youth level. The transfer includes an initial fee, with additional payments possible depending on performance or other factors, and the £30 million figure represents the upper limit of what could be paid. Liverpool currently have several goalkeepers in their squad, including Alisson Becker, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Freddie Woodman, and Vitezslav Jaros. However, Alisson’s contract is set to expire in the summer of 2024, and Mamardashvili’s future at the club remains uncertain. This makes Brughmans a potential long-term option for the club starting in 2027, when he is expected to join permanently. The acquisition of Brughmans is part of a broader strategy by Liverpool’s global talent department, led by Matt Newberry. This department has been actively identifying and recruiting young talent from around the world. Earlier this year, Liverpool signed Senegal’s Mor Talla N’diaye and Austria’s Ifeanyi Ndukwe after both impressed at the U17 World Cup in Qatar. In the past 12 months, the club has also added goalkeeper Armin Pecsi from Hungary and midfielder Samuel Martinez from Colombia. Pecsi, who joined Liverpool in the last year, is currently on loan at TSV Hartberg in Germany. This pattern of scouting and developing young players reflects Liverpool’s ongoing commitment to building through youth and global talent identification, ensuring a strong pipeline of future options across all positions.
