Marseille, one of France's most historic football clubs, has had a difficult summer, marked by a weakened squad, no new player signings, and a significant drop in salary costs due to a financial crisis. Despite these challenges, the club has not met its goals, leading to growing frustration among its fans. The supporters are increasingly turning their attention toward club owner Frank McCourt, who has owned the club since 2016 and has invested nearly 800 million euros in that time. The discontent was visible during the first match of the season on August 21, when fans at the south stand displayed a provocative banner: "Hundreds of millions invested but for what results?" This was in response to a 4-0 victory over Strasbourg, but the criticism continued during a subsequent home match against Paris FC, which ended in a 2-3 loss. During that game, the Commando Ultra 84, one of Marseille’s main ultra groups, showed multiple banners criticizing McCourt, questioning his credibility with one banner reading, "Liar or incompetent?" in red. Daniel Riolo, a Marseille supporter, spoke to RMC about the situation, saying that if McCourt decides to sell the club, he would not be upset. Riolo expressed frustration with the club's annual expenses and lack of success, despite McCourt's investments and the hiring of presidents who initially spoke positively about football but ultimately failed. He drew a comparison to RC Lens, another French club, which was managed remotely by Joseph Oughourlian. When Arnaud Pouille improved the club's finances, the previous owner left, and Benjamin Parrot took over, restoring order. Riolo suggested that McCourt has reached the end of his tenure, implying that he has not been able to deliver the success the club needs. Riolo concluded that he no longer wants McCourt’s money and is looking for a different owner. He criticized the people McCourt has chosen to manage the club, saying they have not delivered results. The fans are clearly looking for a new direction, and the pressure on McCourt continues to grow as the season progresses.
