Birmingham New Street Station, the city’s largest and busiest train station, will be closed for five days during the Christmas period to allow for essential renovations. The station, which normally sees around 140,000 passengers each day, will be shut from December 24 (Christmas Eve) to December 28. This closure is part of a £13 million project aimed at upgrading the overhead power lines, many of which date back to the 1960s. The work is the first phase of a three-year plan, with similar closures planned during the 2027 and 2028 Christmas periods. Although train services will be suspended during the closure, the station building will remain open to allow access for shoppers and visitors to the city center. Facilities such as toilets and the assisted travel lounge will continue to operate, and station staff will be present to help passengers. The decision to close the station during the Christmas period was based on the expectation of significantly lower passenger numbers, estimated to be 50% to 60% less than during a typical week in November or early December. Martin Colmey, route director for Network Rail Central route, acknowledged that the closure would impact travel plans during a key time of the year. However, he emphasized that efforts have been made to minimize disruption. Detailed information about alternative travel options will be provided once Christmas travel tickets become available. Passengers are encouraged to plan ahead and check for rail-replacement bus services through National Rail Enquiries. Confirmed Christmas travel timetables will be published online from early October, giving passengers time to make informed decisions about their holiday travel. Existing bookings will not be affected, and passengers do not need to worry about refunds. The station’s temporary closure is intended to ensure long-term improvements to the infrastructure, supporting future travel needs in the region.
