Superhuman, a productivity platform powered by artificial intelligence, has acquired Fathom, a meeting notetaker startup that was backed by Y Combinator, a well-known startup accelerator. The acquisition is intended to incorporate Fathom’s capabilities into Superhuman’s existing tools, which include an email client, a document editor, a calendar, a database solution, and a new AI agent builder platform. This move aims to enhance Superhuman’s ability to offer a more integrated and intelligent productivity experience.
Fathom was founded in 2020 and has raised over $30 million in funding. As of 2024, it was valued at $94 million, according to financial data from PitchBook. Its investors include notable names such as Zoom Apps Fund, Telescope Partners, and individuals like Steve Huffman, CEO of Reddit, and Kyle Vogt, co-founder of Cruise. Fathom has a large user base, with over 400,000 monthly active users and more than 1 million people who have recorded meetings using the service. It also offers a generous free plan to encourage user growth.
Superhuman had previously tested a notetaker internally with a small group of users but decided to acquire Fathom to integrate a fully developed product into its ecosystem. CEO Shishir Mehrotra explained that building a notetaker from scratch was a complex and time-consuming process, and the effort reinforced the company’s belief in the demand for such tools. While he praised the technical achievements of the Fathom team, he did not specify which features would be incorporated. Mehrotra hinted that the addition of a notetaker could allow Superhuman to provide real-time context from meetings, enhancing user experience.
Fathom’s CEO, Richard White, said that Superhuman’s 40 million users offer a unique opportunity to scale Fathom’s services. He noted that maintaining Fathom as an independent company would require developing many features that already exist in Superhuman’s platform. This acquisition allows Fathom’s technology to be more seamlessly integrated into a larger, more established ecosystem.
The meeting notetaker market is highly competitive, with several startups like Granola, Read AI, and Wispr raising significant capital to support their growth. While these companies have strong user bases or revenue, they face increasing pressure to offer more than just basic notetaking features. Superhuman’s acquisition of Fathom reflects the growing importance of integrating AI-driven tools that can enhance productivity and collaboration in real time.
