Photographer Jonk, known for exploring nearly 2,000 abandoned locations across more than 50 countries and four continents, has released Urbex Stories, a book that reveals the stories behind his photographs. Published by Editions Tempus Fugit, the book features 20 stories and 122 photographs, offering a glimpse into the experiences, challenges, and unexpected encounters that shaped each image. The preface is signed by photographer Pierre de Vallombreuse, adding credibility and insight to Jonk’s work. Jonk describes each photograph as the result of an adventure filled with unpredictability. He recounts incidents such as a heart attack, a physical altercation, and even encounters with Russians in Italy—highlighting the risks and surprises that come with exploring abandoned spaces. These stories provide context to images that are often viewed only in social media, books, or galleries, where the full narrative is usually absent. The book delves into Jonk’s fascination with the remnants of time found in abandoned places, from old theaters and castles to factories and sanatoriums. These locations, frozen in time, offer a unique perspective on history, human activity, and decay. Through his work, Jonk aims to capture not just the visual aspects of these spaces, but the emotions and stories they hold. Urbex Stories will be officially published on 28 September, marking the culmination of Jonk’s extensive travels and explorations. The book invites readers to look beyond the surface of abandoned places and discover the hidden narratives that lie within them.
