Microsoft is introducing the second generation of its Surface Mouse, which includes haptic feedback—a technology that provides subtle physical sensations, like a gentle vibration or click, to enhance user interaction. This new mouse features a customizable action button, primarily intended for quick access to Copilot, Microsoft’s AI-powered assistant, but it can be programmed for other shortcuts using the Surface app. The $79.99 Surface Mouse will begin shipping on October 13th, the same day as the release of the updated Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch devices.
According to Brett Ostrum, corporate vice president of Surface Devices, the haptic feedback adds a small, physical response to actions that are usually only visible on the screen, such as confirming a click or aligning a window. This feedback works across various interactions in Windows 11, including clicks, drags, and alignment, and is also supported in applications like PowerPoint, Affinity, Concepts, and Filmora. Microsoft introduced haptic feedback support in Windows 11 earlier this year, with both Microsoft and Logitech offering hardware that takes advantage of the feature.
While Logitech’s MX Master 4 includes haptic feedback, some of its newer models, like the Pro X2 Superstrike and X3, use a different haptic-based click system that is not compatible with Windows 11’s haptic feedback. Microsoft has also redesigned the Surface Mouse for improved comfort during long use, adding a soft-touch material on the top. The mouse also includes support for Bluetooth 6.0, allowing it to connect to up to three devices simultaneously.
The new Surface Mouse will be available in black and platinum color options, and it marks Microsoft’s continued effort to enhance the user experience with more intuitive and responsive hardware. Alongside the new mouse, the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch devices will also launch on October 13th, offering users a range of updated options for their computing needs.
