Demonstration canceled in Rennes

The prefecture of Ille-et-Vilaine canceled a planned demonstration in Rennes on Tuesday, October 20, citing risks of new violence after similar incidents on October 17. The protest, organized by the FO union, was scheduled for Charles-de-Gaulle Square and had expected between 1,500 and 2,000 participants.

Union leader surprised by ban

Fabrice Lerestif, the departmental head of the FO union, expressed surprise at the cancellation, stating he was not informed of the decision on Monday evening. He planned to meet with students to urge caution, fearing potential violent responses from authorities if the demonstration proceeded.

Violence reported during previous protests

On October 17, violent clashes occurred in Rennes between masked youths and law enforcement. These incidents happened alongside a large parade in the city center, according to the prefecture. Preliminary reports indicate around sixty businesses were damaged or looted during the unrest.

New restrictions on public gatherings

The prefecture also issued a decree prohibiting the gathering of groups between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. in Rennes, specifically in areas where damage occurred last weekend. Prefect Emmanuelle Dubée clarified this was not a curfew but aimed to prevent further predation on businesses.
