Drax, a major UK energy company, has raised its profit expectations for 2026 after experiencing increased demand for its power generation services. This surge in demand was largely driven by a summer heatwave, which caused a significant rise in electricity usage across the country. The company's chief executive, Will Gardiner, noted that strong performance in recent months has continued into the second half of the year, as Drax's facilities played a key role in meeting the heightened power needs during the hot weather. The National Energy System Operator (Neso), which oversees the UK’s electricity grid, issued four emergency calls for additional power supply during the summer. These call-outs were primarily due to record-high temperatures, which increased the demand for cooling and electricity across homes and businesses. Drax reported particularly strong results in July and August, leading the company to expect its adjusted earnings for 2026 to reach the upper end of previous forecasts. Drax’s improved performance has also been supported by its recent acquisition of the Bluefield Solar Income Fund (BSIF), completed in August for £561 million. This acquisition is part of Drax’s broader strategy to diversify its power generation portfolio and strengthen its position in the UK energy market. Gardiner emphasized that the company is focused on enhancing UK energy security, increasing its power generation capacity, and evolving into a more comprehensive energy solutions provider. The integration of BSIF is progressing smoothly, bringing substantial benefits to Drax and creating opportunities for growth in its asset base and system services. Following the announcement of its improved outlook, Drax’s shares rose 0.8% to 826p in early trading, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s strategic direction and performance.
