Back Market, a French online platform focused on selling reconditioned electronics, has launched Mine My Phone, an interactive website that explores the raw materials used in smartphones. The platform highlights that a 200-gram smartphone requires more than 266 kilograms of raw materials, which is over 1,300 times the weight of the device itself. This revelation comes from a study conducted by Back Market across six countries, which also calls for new legislation to ensure electronic devices last for at least ten years.
The Mine My Phone platform provides a detailed library of more than twenty metals found in smartphones, including indium. Indium is used in trace amounts, primarily in the screen, as part of indium tin oxide—a transparent conductive material that enables touchscreens to detect finger movements. China supplies over 70 percent of the world's indium, and currently, none of it is recycled, even though it could theoretically be recovered from existing screens.
According to an Opinium survey conducted for Back Market, more than half of the 6,000 people surveyed across six countries, including France, could not name any raw materials in their phones. Only one in four was certain about the composition of their device, and seven in ten had never tried to find out where these materials came from. The survey also showed that 66 percent of respondents supported the idea of a ten-year durability standard for smartphones.
Europe has already taken steps toward longer device lifespans: since June 2025, manufacturers must guarantee seven years of spare parts and five years of software updates after a model stops being sold. Back Market wants to push further and suggests that extending a smartphone's use from two and a half years to ten could prevent the extraction of about 757 kilograms of materials per device. The company is working with a coalition of manufacturers, government agencies, and organizations focused on the circular economy—repair, reuse, and recycling—to support this ten-year standard. The first members of this coalition will be announced before the Slow Tech Summit, an event Back Market is hosting in Paris on October 15th.
