Copper network closure timeline

France's fixed-line telephone network, based on copper infrastructure, is being phased out by Orange, the company that owns it. The closure is set to be completed nationwide by the end of 2030, with specific timelines determined for each commune. New copper-based subscriptions have been unavailable in most communes since January 2026, and the commercial closure of the remaining areas is expected by January 2027.

Alternative to copper-based fixed lines

Users can still maintain a fixed-line telephone without an internet box through a service called BleuFix, provided by France Téléphone. This service uses the mobile network instead of copper or fiber and allows users to keep their existing fixed-line number. It costs 19.90 euros per month, with no long-term contract, and includes unlimited calls to both fixed and mobile numbers in mainland France.

BleuFix setup and usability

The service comes with the Maxcom telephone, which is pre-configured with a SIM card. It can be used by simply plugging it into an electrical outlet, as long as there is adequate mobile reception. This makes it a practical option for people who do not need an internet box, such as those who rely on smartphones for internet access, or for elderly individuals who prefer traditional telephones.

BleuFix for secondary homes and professionals

BleuFix is also useful for secondary residences where installing an internet box solely for a telephone might not be cost-effective. For professionals like merchants, artisans, and independent workers, having a dedicated fixed number can be crucial for business communications. They can use BleuFix to set up a fixed line without needing an internet box, especially if their location already has a fiber connection for other services.
