After a family tragedy, Cha Hyun-su (Song Kang), a solitary teenager struggling with deep depression, moves into the Green Home residence. While he has largely cut himself off from the world, an inexplicable phenomenon begins to affect the population: humans are transforming into monsters as terrifying and varied as they are. The residents of the building quickly realize they are trapped. Among them are the mysterious Pyeon Sang-wook (Lee Jin-wook) and the former firefighter Seo Yi-kyung (Lee Si-young). As for Hyun-su, he discovers that he himself may be undergoing a transformation.
Adapted from a webtoon, the Netflix series Sweet Home imagines an entire gallery of grotesque and unsettling creatures that give its apocalypse a very particular identity. The monsters are ultimately only the most visible part of the narrative, as monstrosity is also internal. The transformation of the characters is linked to their desires, impulses, and frustrations, allowing the series to pose a much more interesting question than mere survival: what still makes someone a human being when everything around them collapses?
Another strength of Sweet Home lies in its gallery of characters. The Green Home residence brings together individuals who would probably never have had any reason to speak to each other and who must nevertheless learn to live, fight, and sometimes die together. Over the course of its seasons, the universe expands considerably beyond the initial building to explore the consequences of the catastrophe on a much larger scale. This change in ambition allows the drama to gradually move toward a much more post-apocalyptic narrative.
Between horror, action, and human drama, Sweet Home therefore uses its monster invasion to tell something much more intimate about the fears and desires of its characters. A dark series, sometimes disturbing and often spectacular, which should appeal to those who like both nightmare creatures and survival stories where humans remain ultimately the greatest enigma. Sweet Home, created by Lee Eung-bok, Hong So-ri, and Jang Young-woo, with Song Kang, Lee Jin-wook, Lee Si-young, Do-hyun Lee... 3 seasons available on Netflix.
