French Navy intercepts oil tanker
The French Navy intercepted an oil tanker, the DF Peak, more than 800 kilometers south of La Réunion on Monday, October 12. The vessel was suspected of sailing under a false flag, which led to its diversion under military escort following an inspection that revealed irregularities regarding its nationality.Vessel under European sanctions
The DF Peak is listed on the European Union’s sanctions list against Russia. At the time of the interception, it was flying the Benin flag, despite being previously registered under the Russian flag as the Kaliningrad. The ship is suspected of being part of the "ghost fleet" used to circumvent Western sanctions on Russian oil exports.Legal investigation launched
A judicial investigation was initiated on Tuesday by the Saint-Denis prosecutor's office. The case involves the failure of the ship’s captain to justify its nationality during a sea inspection, a violation punishable by up to two years in prison and a 300,000 euro fine. The investigation will determine the ship’s ownership and any criminal liability involved.Crew under detention
The 21 crew members, of various nationalities, were placed under restrictions and deprivation of liberty for an initial 48-hour period. This can be extended by a judge in renewable 120-hour periods. The DF Peak is 244 meters long and has been under EU sanctions since June 25, 2024.President highlights anti-trafficking stance
French President Emmanuel Macron described the interception as an operation against illicit fuel trafficking. He stated France’s commitment to combating the "ghost fleet" globally, sharing images of the seizure on the X network. The investigation currently focuses on the irregularity of the ship’s flag and will determine its involvement in illegal hydrocarbon transport.
