Xiaomi's new electric sedan spotted in China

The next electric sedan from Xiaomi, the SU9 Lux, has been spotted on Chinese roads under heavy camouflage. The vehicle is described as an evolution of the SU7, with extended dimensions, including a longer body and wheelbase, potentially exceeding 5.20 meters in length.

Design similarities and features

The prototype's silhouette is similar to the SU7, retaining the sloping roofline toward the trunk, sports sedan proportions, and yellow brake calipers. The rear doors are longer, and the body extends between them and the trunk.

Technical specifications and safety features

According to initial estimates, the wheelbase would be close to 3.10 meters. The prototype also features a LiDAR sensor on the roof for environmental detection during driving assistance, and rear wheels that steer slightly to reduce the turning radius and improve stability at high speeds.

Legal steps and European plans

Xiaomi filed the "Xiaomi SU9 Lux" brand in China's automotive category last February and completed the opposition period last month. The company has not officially revealed the SU9 Lux, its presentation date, or price. Xiaomi is preparing to launch its vehicles in Europe in 2027, with Germany as the first market. It remains unclear if the SU9 Lux will be available in Europe.

Xiaomi's expansion and challenges

Xiaomi is continuing its expansion in the automotive market, having launched a new version of the SU7 earlier this year. The SU7 range exceeded 500,000 deliveries in 28.5 months, but the company is facing declining sales in China, with a 19.55% year-on-year decrease in deliveries last month. A more luxurious version of the SU7, the SU9 Lux, could help Xiaomi expand its offerings.
