Between 8 and 11 million people in France help care for a sick, elderly, or disabled family member on a daily basis. These individuals, often referred to as caregivers, frequently face challenges such as stress, isolation, and a lack of support. Despite the significant number of caregivers, many are unaware of the resources available to assist them. A recent survey by Agirc-Arrco, a private sector pension organization, found that 76 percent of 8,000 caregivers had not accessed any support services. In response, Agirc-Arrco is launching a campaign to raise awareness and provide assistance to caregivers, especially during National Caregiver Day on October 6. To mark this occasion, Agirc-Arrco will organize nearly 80 events across 80 French cities from September 30 to October 16. These events will include film discussions, conferences, roundtables, forums, marches, and performances, all aimed at informing caregivers about the available support. The organization will highlight its services, such as the telephone service Écoute, conseil et orientation (Listen, Advice, and Guidance) and the online platform Maboussoleaidants.fr, which provide guidance and practical solutions to prevent burnout and offer respite. Frédérique Decherf, director of Social Action at Agirc-Arrco, emphasized the importance of supporting caregivers. "Our ambition is simple: a caregiver must know where to turn and easily access the solutions they need. Taking care of a loved one should not mean forgetting oneself. No caregiver should be left alone in a situation, which most often has consequences on their well-being and health. Our role is to go to them, to better identify them and provide them with concrete solutions to take a break and avoid burnout," she said. These events aim to ensure caregivers understand the resources available to them and feel less isolated in their roles. Caregivers interested in attending these events can find the full program on the Agirc-Arrco website. The initiative reflects a broader effort to address the often-overlooked needs of caregivers and provide them with the tools to manage their responsibilities while also taking care of their own health and well-being.
