Images leaked on September 6 through the Chinese website Ithome, obtained from a blogger, revealed two new color options for the Huawei Pura X Max: a "Bordeaux red" and a blue-dominant color yet to be named. The latter will be officially announced during the HarmonyOS 7 and Mate XT 2 conference on September 7. The Pura X Max is a foldable smartphone that features a large horizontal fold, often referred to as a "passport" format, which opens along the length of the device. It has been available for sale in China since April 25, 2026, starting at 10,999 yuan (approximately 1,410 euros). The device is powered by the Kirin 9030 Pro processor, and its top-tier model, with 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage, is priced at 13,999 yuan (about 1,790 euros). The newly introduced colors feature a single, smooth back without patterns or dividing lines, a design that differs from previously sold colors like Zero Degree White or Stellar Blue, which had borders and fine stripes. At launch, only black and olive gold offered a smooth back, making the new colors part of Huawei's effort to expand its more understated design options. The timing of the Huawei conference is notable, as it occurs two days before Apple's planned release of the iPhone Ultra, which will be its first foldable smartphone. Apple's event is scheduled for September 9, and on the same day as the leak, Xiaomi will also present its 18 Fold model. This marks a period of intense competition, with three major companies launching foldable smartphones in a short span. Huawei has positioned itself as a pioneer in the large horizontal fold format, which it introduced before Google's Pixel Fold and Apple's iPhone Fold. Samsung recently released its Galaxy Z Fold 8 in August, adding to the growing market. Apple, however, still needs to showcase its first foldable device, which has not yet been seen by the public. In addition to the new colors, Huawei will also stop using the Z-fold design for its Mate XT series to align more closely with Samsung's standards. The Pura X Max is not currently marketed in Europe, and the new colors will not be available there either. One reason for this is the absence of Google services in Huawei's devices, which can be a barrier for users in regions where Google's ecosystem is widely used. Despite this, Huawei continues to focus on expanding its presence in the Chinese market, where the Pura X Max has been well-received.
