The head of publishing at Larian Studios, the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3, recently responded to changes at Xbox, particularly concerning Obsidian Entertainment. Xbox has undergone a major restructuring, and the recent decision to have Bethesda oversee Obsidian has sparked concern in the gaming industry. Michael Douse, who leads publishing at Larian Studios, shared his worries about this shift in a public statement. A member of the Baldur's Gate 3 development team also voiced concerns on Twitter, noting that someone involved in the publishing of the game had expressed little enthusiasm about Obsidian losing part of its independence. "I can't imagine what it must feel like to have a certain independence and then suddenly find yourself working under the orders of a competitor," he wrote on social media. Although Larian Studios and Obsidian Entertainment had previously worked together on Fallout New Vegas and both later became part of Microsoft’s larger gaming portfolio, they maintained distinct approaches to game development. The comment about working under a competitor led to some pushback, with one internet user suggesting that the two studios couldn’t be considered rivals since they are now under the same parent company. Douse responded by saying, "If I set aside the fact that I was referring to a time before the acquisition, the fact that you think two entities belonging to the same parent company cannot be competitors tells me that you have never worked in a large company." Before the recent restructuring at Xbox, Obsidian had already begun work on Avowed 2, a project the studio was particularly excited about. However, they were later assigned a new Fallout project, which remains shrouded in mystery. This project will be clearly separated from Fallout 5, as well as remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Jill Braff, president of Bethesda, addressed concerns in a memo, emphasizing that Obsidian’s creative freedom would remain intact. She assured employees and fans that Obsidian’s leadership, including CEO Feargus Urquhart, would continue to run the studio under her oversight, and that Bethesda Game Studios would remain responsible for the Fallout franchise. It remains to be seen whether Obsidian’s upcoming Fallout game will retain the unique creative flair that has defined the studio’s work in the past.
