Microsoft is exploring whether to include support for physical disc-based games in its upcoming console, Project Helix, as the video game industry increasingly shifts toward digital distribution. The company has launched a survey within the Xbox Insider Hub app, asking Xbox Insiders—members of a community that tests new features—to rate the importance of various console features. Among the options is the ability to install games from a physical disc, with participants choosing from three categories: "not necessary," "nice to have," or "essential." Selecting "essential" would mean that a user would not consider buying a future Xbox if the feature was missing. The survey also includes other potential features, such as customizable console lighting that changes based on the game being played and an automatic recording system that helps users easily share gameplay clips. Users are asked to prioritize these features, including support for physical discs, cloud gaming, the ability to connect a keyboard and mouse, and using YouTube while playing. However, even if Microsoft decides to include a disc reader in Project Helix, it does not guarantee that future games will be sold on physical discs. The presence of a disc reader would also allow users to play games from previous console generations. Unlike Sony, which recently announced plans to stop producing physical discs for its PlayStation games starting in 2028, Microsoft has not yet made a final decision on whether to support physical media in its next console. The survey is part of Microsoft’s ongoing evaluation of user preferences and does not confirm that a disc reader will be included in Project Helix. Additionally, Microsoft has recently introduced a feature that allows some physical Xbox games to be converted into digital licenses, further reflecting the company’s focus on digital content. The survey highlights the evolving landscape of gaming, where digital distribution is becoming more dominant. While some users still value the convenience and collectibility of physical games, the industry is clearly moving toward online delivery. Microsoft’s approach remains flexible, and the outcome of the survey may influence whether the next Xbox includes a disc reader, though no final decision has been made.
