Modeste Madoré and Yvan Lacanal have been awarded the Vanille Prize 2026 in the categories of Illustration and Fictional Work, respectively. The Vanille Prize, established in 2012 by the association La Réunion des Livres, honors authors whose work is published by one of the publishing houses from La Réunion or the Indian Ocean. Despite a drawing award that was paused in 2026, the awards were given in the categories of Fiction and Illustration. Modeste Madoré received the Vanille Prize 2026 — Illustration for Au merveilleux pays d’Alix, published by Éditions à la gomme. The publisher's summary describes the work as set in the chaotic world of the English author Lewis Carroll, where curious little girls can change size at will, where white rabbits run after time, where smiling cats appear and disappear and where queens cut heads for no particular reason. The narrative follows Alice, who transforms into Alix, speaks Creole, gets bored by a river and jumps into a waterfall in pursuit of the very busy White Rabbit. Yvan Lacanal was awarded the Vanille Prize 2026 — Fictional Work for Le tableau de Vollard, published by Orphie. The publisher's summary describes the work as focusing on Ambroise Vollard, one of the greatest art dealers and discoverers of talent of the 20th century. His collection is described as invaluable, but the painting he prefers is a small format without equal painted in Arles. The narrative follows a chase through the secrets of the colossal Vollard collection among wealthy collectors, artists, dealers and swindlers. The story is described as an immersion into the artistic universe of an era in full transformation and the obsession of a man for the beauty of a painting. The Vanille Prize jury is composed of professionals from culture, books and reading. It is co-chaired by Natacha Eloy, illustrator and comic book artist, winner of the Vanille Prize 2025 — Illustration, and Na Hassi, author, winner of the Vanille Prize 2025 — Fictional Work. The Vanille Prize — Illustration — Fictional Work is organized by La Réunion des Livres with the support of the Department of Cultural Affairs of La Réunion (DAC Réunion), the Réunion Region and the Sofia.
