A woman who was critically injured in a crash during a police pursuit in Stratford-upon-Avon has died. Karen Joseph, 62, was severely injured after a black Audi A3 driven by Roman Kalas, 19, crashed into her on Warwick Road on August 24. The incident occurred during a pursuit by police, who followed Mr. Kalas's car for about six minutes before he failed to stop and continued toward the A46. Warwickshire Police stated that Kalas later turned back toward Stratford on the A439 Warwick Road before the crash. Mr. Kalas died at the scene, and a post-mortem examination determined the initial cause of death to be traumatic head and chest injuries, according to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Mrs. Joseph, who was from Stratford-upon-Avon, was taken to the hospital with critical injuries and passed away on Friday. Her daughter, who was a passenger in the car, suffered only minor injuries in the incident, the police watchdog noted. The IOPC explained that the police officer, driving a single-crewed car, began the pursuit after Mr. Kalas failed to stop for police on Birmingham Road. At that time, the vehicle's sirens were activated, and emergency lights were on. Inquests for both Mr. Kalas and Mrs. Joseph are set to be opened by coroner Sean McGovern for Warwickshire on Friday. IOPC director Derrick Campbell expressed his condolences to the families and friends of Roman Kalas and Karen Joseph, stating that the organization has spoken with both families and will provide regular updates on the investigation. He emphasized the importance of an independent investigation, especially since two members of the public died in an incident involving a police pursuit. The families have requested privacy during this difficult time.
