Student protest in Toulouse

A student protest in Toulouse on October 13 drew between 10,500 and 15,000 participants, according to official and union estimates. The demonstration was part of a nationwide movement against education policies.

Shortened route sparks debate

The protest route was shortened by authorities, who redirected the march from the Lycée des Arènes to the avenue de l'URSS instead of the originally planned Monument of Resistance. The CGT union criticized this decision, saying the original endpoint was safe and appropriate.

Tensions and tear gas

As the march proceeded, tensions rose near the rectorate and in Saint-Agne. Police used tear gas to control the crowd, while a human chain formed by unionists attempted to shield students from law enforcement.

Rail disruptions and arrests

Rail services between Toulouse and Portet were halted when demonstrators were found on the tracks at Saint-Agne station. Later in the day, disruptions also affected other regional train lines, and fifteen people were arrested, according to La Dépêche du Midi.

Protest demands and support

Students are calling for the abolition of the Parcoursup application system, more school staff, better infrastructure, and changes to study schedules. Six trade union groups backed the protest, showing continued support for the movement.
