Apple has long allowed iOS users to transform photos into stickers that can be sent via iMessage, though these stickers are limited in design and functionality. Recently, OpenAI introduced a new feature in ChatGPT Images that simplifies the process of turning nearly any photo into customizable stickers for sharing with friends and family. This update expands the sticker-making capabilities of the popular AI chatbot, making it more accessible for users who want to personalize their messages.
To use the new sticker feature, users need the ChatGPT mobile app (available on both iOS and Android). Once the app is open, they should tap the menu icon at the top left to open the sidebar, select "Images," and then go to the "Trending" tab. Under this tab, they can select "Stickers" and begin the creation process. Users can choose a style, provide a reference image or images, and select a set of emojis to guide the AI. After a short wait, ChatGPT will generate nine stickers that can be added to iMessage and WhatsApp. If users choose WhatsApp, they will be prompted to name the sticker pack before it is added. However, if using an Android device, iMessage will not be an option.
If the generated stickers do not meet expectations, users can request modifications. By tapping on a sticker and selecting "Edit," they can describe the changes they want in a prompt bar. Alternatively, users can write their own prompt to ensure the AI stays closer to their original image. Once satisfied, they can tap "Add to chat app" and choose either iMessage or WhatsApp to export the stickers. If users need to make further adjustments, they can tap the image and select "Edit" again. If the AI completely misunderstands the request, users can tap the three dots icon and choose "Retry" to start over.
Once stickers are added to a messaging app, sending them is straightforward. For iMessage, users can open the Messages app, select a conversation, tap the Plus button, choose "Stickers," and then select the OpenAI logo in the compose window to pick the desired sticker. On WhatsApp, users can open a conversation, tap the sticker icon on the right side of the compose bar, and possibly select a second sticker icon below if GIFs are displayed. The chosen sticker will be grouped under the name assigned to its pack. It’s important to note that using this feature consumes daily and weekly usage limits for free ChatGPT accounts, which may require users to wait for their limits to reset before making new requests.
