Early harvest in Pays d'Oc

The 2026 wine harvest in the Pays d'Oc region began earlier than ever, with the first harvests launching as early as mid-July, according to reports. This unusually early start was driven by a series of heatwaves that affected the vineyards throughout the summer.

Heatwaves test the vines

The early harvest was accompanied by five successive heatwaves that tested the vines, though initial results suggest both stable volumes and high-quality grapes. Despite the extreme weather, the region's wine producers reported that the quality of the grapes remained largely unaffected.

Pays d'Oc harvest size

The IGP Pays d'Oc, a regional wine certification body, stated that the harvest, estimated at 5 million hectoliters, represents nearly half of the wine production in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. This makes it one of the largest harvests in the region's history.

Record early start

Jacques Gravegeal, president of the Pays d'Oc Syndicate, noted that the vintage will be exceptional due to its early start and the intensity of the climatic conditions. He highlighted the resilience of the vineyard and the adaptability of the winemakers, who managed to preserve good quality despite the challenges.

Harvest timeline

The harvest began on July 15, 2026, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, setting a new record for an early start by ten days. It then spread throughout the entire Pays d'Oc between the end of July and the beginning of August, continuing for an average of seven weeks at a sustained pace, with only minor interruptions.

Storm brings relief

A storm on August 24, 2026, brought some relief in certain areas, allowing the maturation of late varieties that had been slowed by the drought. The IGP Pays d'Oc indicated that the rains provided some respite and aided the development of these varieties, which had been struggling under the prolonged heat.

High-quality vintage

The first tastings suggest a high-quality vintage across all three wine colors—white, red, and rosé. Whites and rosés are noted for their fruity expression, richness, and freshness, while reds show intense colors and good concentration. The grapes arrived at the wineries in very good sanitary condition, indicating that the challenges of the season did not significantly impact the quality.
