Anthropic, a leading artificial intelligence company, is launching a new initiative aimed at preparing candidates for the American presidential election on the topic of AI. As AI becomes more influential in society, Anthropic believes it is essential for political candidates to understand its implications. The company has announced a "presidential engagement" program, which it plans to implement two years before the next U.S. presidential election. To support this effort, Anthropic is seeking a "political programs manager" to design and manage the initiative. The role of the political programs manager will include identifying potential candidates from both the Democratic and Republican parties. These candidates, as well as their advisors, will receive training on AI policies. The goal is to ensure that all candidates understand the technology and its impact on governance. Beyond the 2028 presidential election, the manager will also be responsible for developing a broader "candidate awareness or information program" that covers federal, state, and local elections. This program will provide information on AI and related policies to candidates and their advisors from both major political parties. Anthropic is not the first technology company to engage in political advocacy, but its efforts come at a time of tension with the current U.S. administration. In March, the Trump administration added Anthropic to a list of entities deemed to pose a risk to national security after the company refused to allow unrestricted use of its AI models by the military. Recently, former President Donald Trump criticized Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, for advocating a slowdown in AI development. Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social, that a "strong and intelligent president" is the only safeguard AI needs and claimed he had prevented AI experts like Amodei from doing "bad or potentially bad things." Anthropic hopes to increase its influence in the political arena through this new role. The political programs manager will also work with federal, state, and local teams to ensure that Anthropic's political initiatives align with its public voice and political positions. Whether this effort will lead to greater influence with the next U.S. president remains to be seen.
