Prosecutors in Colombia have accused former Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia of misusing her authority after she reportedly ordered a lie detector test on her personal nanny. The incident was first reported by the Colombian news magazine Semana in 2023, which claimed that the nanny, Marelbys Meza, was subjected to a polygraph test concerning the alleged disappearance of a large sum of cash from Sarabia's residence. At the time, Sarabia was serving as the chief of staff to President Gustavo Petro, Colombia’s first left-wing president, who led the country from 2022 until August of this year. Although Sarabia resigned from her position in June 2023, she was later appointed as Colombia’s foreign minister and, after leaving that role, became the country’s ambassador to the United Kingdom. She has consistently denied any wrongdoing in the matter. Meza, a 32-year-old woman who worked as Sarabia’s personal caregiver, described the experience as unsettling. According to Semana, she was taken by Sarabia’s driver to an official building across from the presidential palace, where she felt as though she was being "kidnapped." There, she was connected to a polygraph machine and questioned about the missing cash. Meza denied any involvement in the disappearance during the test and has continued to assert her innocence in media interviews since the incident came to light. Prosecutors claim that Sarabia improperly used her position and state resources to investigate a private matter that had no connection to her official duties. They argue that this action constituted an abuse of power. During a court hearing, Sarabia denied the allegations but did not provide further details. Earlier, she had posted on social media that her legal team was handling the case and that she respected the judicial process. The case has drawn attention due to Sarabia’s high-profile role in the administration of President Gustavo Petro, who has been a central figure in Colombia’s political landscape. As the investigation unfolds, the legal battle will likely continue to be closely watched, given Sarabia’s prominent position in both national and international affairs.
