Demonstrators gather in Perpignan

On Saturday, October 24, 1,500 people gathered at Place de Catalogne, a public square in Perpignan, before moving within the area authorized by a prefectural decree that prohibits demonstrations outside designated zones.

Movement initially peaceful

The protest began in a calm manner, with participants moving within the boundaries allowed by local authorities. However, tensions later arose when a group of 500 individuals separated from the main procession and attempted to enter the city center.

Law enforcement intervenes

Law enforcement opposed the group’s attempt to move into the city center, resulting in the detention of twenty-one people, including four who were placed in custody. No damage to property has been reported at this time.

No gatherings at key locations

No demonstrations were observed at the exits of the A9 highway, including its north and south tolls, or near commercial areas, which are protected by the national gendarmerie. These locations remained secure throughout the day.

Police forces remain mobilized

In Perpignan, national police personnel, supported by municipal police forces, were on duty and remained fully mobilized to maintain order and ensure public safety.

Authorities monitor situation

The prefect of the Pyrénées-Orientales, Pierre Regnault de la Mothe, was monitoring the day’s operations at the national police’s information and command center, alongside Laurent Astruc, the interdepartmental director of the national police.

Situation calmer than previous week

By 5:15 PM, the situation was calmer than it had been the previous week, according to officials. The prefect also reminded the public that a curfew applies to all minors in the region on Saturday, October 24, from 7:30 PM until Sunday, October 25, at 6 AM. This measure aims to prevent public order disturbances and ensure the safety of everyone.
