French Tech 2030 startups rely heavily on US email services

The latest group of 80 French Tech 2030 startups, selected for their deep technology innovations, predominantly use American email services. Reports indicate that 71 of the startups rely on U.S.-based email platforms, while only 6 use French email providers and one uses Proton, a Swiss-based service known for privacy.

Program aims to boost French tech independence

The French Tech 2030 initiative, launched by the French government, seeks to develop and produce key technologies within France. It focuses on eight strategic sectors, including artificial intelligence, space, quantum computing, and cybersecurity, with the goal of enhancing the country's technological autonomy.

Startups operate internationally with limited French digital presence

Seventy-nine percent of the 80 startups have operations outside France, and 89% use American companies for their email services, mostly Google and Microsoft. This widespread use of foreign platforms has raised concerns about France's digital sovereignty and its ability to control critical technologies.

Websites show a preference for international domain names

Out of the 79 startups with websites, only 8 use the .fr domain, which is specific to France. In contrast, 48 use the .com domain, managed by Verisign, while others opt for .ai, .io, and .eu extensions. Some companies, such as Glimps, use .re, the domain associated with the island of Reunion, despite being based in Brittany.

Email domains and servers reflect global tech dominance

Microsoft and Google dominate the email server landscape, with 68 of the 80 startups using their services. These two companies account for 85% of the startups' email infrastructure, with a nearly equal split in their usage among the selected companies. Some startups have inconsistent domain usage, with .fr email addresses paired with .io or .com websites.
