RENÉ 2026 event details

Stage director Jean Boillot is organizing the second edition of RENÉ (European Meetings of New Writings) from 26 to 29 October 2026 in Metz. This event brings together creators from theater, music, and video games to explore new forms of storytelling that combine live performance with digital technologies.

Origins of the initiative

The idea for RENÉ emerged during the lockdowns caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Jean Boillot noticed that many artistic teams were turning to digital platforms to stay connected with audiences. This led to the realization that while innovation was happening in theater and technology, there was no clear point of convergence between them.

Challenges of digital performance

During the lockdowns, Boillot’s company, La Spirale, experimented with online performances that attracted up to 800 viewers. However, these experiences revealed the limitations of traditional theatrical formats when adapted for digital screens. This prompted a need to rethink how drama is structured for new digital environments.

Collaborative approach to new dramaturgies

To address these challenges, Boillot’s company established a research and development laboratory in 2021. This lab brings together theater writers, game designers, and engineers to create a "theater ready to play." In this format, the audience gradually becomes an active participant, similar to a video game player.

Intersection of theater and video games

Boillot emphasized the potential for collaboration between theater and video game creators. Both fields explore similar themes, such as storytelling in first or third person, and online role-playing. This intersection offers diverse and rich possibilities for new forms of dramatic expression.

Influence of artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence is a major focus of the RENÉ 2026 meetings. AI is already impacting creative fields, and some artists are using it to enhance their work. For example, Pauline Sales used AI in a play presented at the previous RENÉ event. This year, Sabrina Pierre will participate in a research program led by Julie Valero from the University Grenoble Alpes.

Exploring new formats with a hackathon

RENÉ 2026 includes a writing hackathon that challenges creators to develop new formats combining theater and digital elements. One of the challenges involves the "conversational frame," where AI technologies like chatbots or holograms engage in dialogue with actors. This requires rethinking how to dramaturgize multi-presence on stage.

Inclusive theatrical experiences

The event also explores how digital environments can be used to create more inclusive theatrical experiences. This includes writing plays or performances tailored for people with disabilities or illnesses. These digital tools allow for new ways of storytelling that were previously difficult to achieve.

Future of live performance

The European Meetings of New Writings in Metz are positioning themselves as a key platform for live performance to adapt to technological changes. The event aims to shape the future of theater by fostering innovation and collaboration across different creative fields.
