Funding approved for displaced populations

The Occitanie region has approved 700,000 euros in funding to support 13 local actors in their efforts to assist displaced populations. This decision is part of the region’s ongoing policy focused on solidarity and integration.

Decision made in committee meeting

The funding was approved during a meeting of the permanent committee on October 16, following a proposal by Carole Delga, the region’s president. The funds are intended to improve the reception conditions for individuals granted international protection and asylum seekers.

Historical context of regional support

Carole Delga highlighted the region’s long-standing tradition of supporting people in exile, referencing the Retirada of 500,000 Spanish republicans after the Spanish Civil War. She noted that since 2017, nearly nine million euros has been allocated to help municipalities and organizations working with displaced populations.

Concrete projects receiving support

The regional support includes specific initiatives such as the Gardo case and the Aurora school in Nîmes, part of the SOS Solidarités group. This school, which helps displaced individuals learn French, received 85,000 euros in funding.

Cultural initiative for displaced students

The Occitanie region also launched Voix Plurielles, a speech competition centered on freedom, in which 20 displaced students from Iran, Afghanistan, Yemen, and Ukraine participated. This event highlights the region’s efforts to integrate displaced individuals through cultural and educational programs.

Long-term impact of regional efforts

Since 2017, the region has supported more than 15,000 people through 220 projects. These initiatives cover areas such as language learning, access to rights, professional integration, health care, mental health, mobility, and digital skills.
