The Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome is preparing a major staged performance of Richard Wagner’s Ring cycle, a series of four operas that together tell a complex mythological story. The cycle will begin with Die Walküre in October 2025, followed by performances of Siegfried on 21, 24, and 27 October of the same year. The remaining operas, Götterdämmerung and Das Rheingold, are scheduled for 2027 and 2028, respectively, completing the full tetralogy. Stage director Vincent Huguet has chosen to set each opera in different periods of Roman history. Die Walküre will be set in ancient times, Siegfried in the Renaissance, and future installments will explore the papal era and Italy’s colonial history in the 20th century. The performances will take place in the Sala Santa Cecilia, a concert hall within the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, designed by architect Renzo Piano. The set design is by Pierre Yovanovitch, known for his innovative and visually striking stage creations. For the performance of Siegfried, American tenor Clay Hilley will take on the title role, with Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke as Mime and Michael Volle as the Wanderer. Other notable performers include Wolfgang Koch as Alberich, Falk Struckmann as Fafner, and Elisabet Strid as Brünnhilde, a central character in the Ring cycle. Rome last hosted a fully staged Ring cycle in 1961, making this new production a significant event for the city. The Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia previously presented the complete Ring between 1988 and 1991, but only in concert form without staging. This upcoming production will be the first time the full Ring cycle is staged in a symphonic hall in Rome, marking a major milestone for both the institution and the city’s cultural scene.
