Nvidia launches new AI-focused PCs

Nvidia has launched a new line of PCs designed for artificial intelligence tasks, emphasizing their high performance. These machines, announced last week, are equipped with the Nvidia RTX Spark graphics card and are intended for developers working with large language models locally.

High cost raises questions

Despite their impressive capabilities, these new PCs are expensive, which may limit their appeal to the average consumer. Their high price is a concern for many, as most people may not need such powerful hardware for everyday use.

Designed for local AI workloads

The new PCs are aimed at developers who prefer to run AI models on their own hardware rather than using cloud services. This approach avoids recurring costs for AI tokens from companies like OpenAI or Anthropic, making the investment more justifiable for professionals.

Microsoft's earlier AI PC initiative

Microsoft previously launched the Copilot+ PC brand in May 2024, promising AI-based features. One of these features, called "Recall," was meant to act as a "photographic memory" for the PC, but it faced significant privacy issues.

Recall's failure to launch

Despite being expected to be the flagship feature of the Copilot+ platform, "Recall" has not been fully implemented. As of 2026, it remains in a preliminary version and is no longer mentioned in Microsoft's marketing materials.

Nvidia's performance surpasses Copilot+

The Nvidia Spark RTX computers offer up to 1 petaflop of AI performance, which is 25 times more powerful than the current generation of Copilot+ PCs. They not only meet the specifications required for Copilot+ classification but far exceed them.

Copilot+ brand struggles

The Copilot+ brand has not gained traction, partly due to the general public's wariness of AI. Surveys show that most people are more concerned than excited about AI, making it unwise to link the brand of flagship PCs with an AI chatbot.

Partners distance from Copilot+

Major hardware partners like Dell and HP have avoided mentioning the Copilot+ brand in their recent announcements. This suggests that the brand is not resonating with consumers or partners in the industry.

Lack of compelling AI features

The AI features of Copilot+ PCs are not convincing to users. Features like Windows Studio Effects and live subtitles seem more like demonstrations than essential tools. The NPU, supposed to handle AI tasks locally, often appears inactive, with only Recall showing some activity.

NPU's limited role

Despite Microsoft's emphasis on the NPU as a key component, it is largely unused in most tasks. The powerful Nvidia RTX Spark GPU is the real workhorse, raising questions about why the NPU was highlighted so prominently in marketing.

Future of AI PCs

Microsoft and its partners are targeting a niche market with these high-end AI PCs. However, for these technologies to succeed, they must become more affordable and accessible to the general public. The arrival of AI PC 3.0, which could meet these needs, remains uncertain.
