Ethan Hawke reflected on his friendship with Robert Redford during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last year, shortly after Redford's passing. Despite never landing a major role in a film directed by Redford, the two men formed a lasting bond. Their first encounter happened during an audition for the 1992 film A River Runs Through It, a role Hawke was not ultimately cast in. The experience, however, became a defining moment in his career. Hawke prepared extensively for the audition, arriving early but feeling overwhelmed by the weight of Redford’s presence and legacy. In a report by Deadline, Hawke admitted he was struggling with nerves and even considered asking for a break. When Redford invited him to proceed, Hawke confessed his anxiety, requesting a short pause to regain his composure. Redford, known for his support of actors, encouraged him to take the time he needed. However, Hawke, exhausted from a sleepless night and not wanting to delay the process, decided to go ahead with the audition immediately. Once he began, Hawke found his footing and delivered a performance that left an impression. Although Redford felt he was too young for the role, he praised Hawke’s talent and predicted a successful career. This moment marked the start of a meaningful friendship between the two actors. Over the years, their relationship continued to grow, with Hawke appearing in Quiz Show, a film directed by Redford, and co-starring with Julie Delpy in Before Sunrise, which Redford chose to open the Sundance Film Festival in 1995. A River Runs Through It, the film where their paths first crossed, is now available to stream on platforms like SFR Play and Molotov TV, as well as through video-on-demand services. The film remains a notable piece of Redford’s directorial career and a pivotal moment in Hawke’s journey as an actor.
