Turkish police enter Halk TV headquarters

Turkish police have entered the headquarters of Halk TV, the country's main opposition television channel, and taken control of the building, according to the channel's announcement on Wednesday, October 14. The channel reported that the police had interrupted its live broadcast and appointed an administrator to oversee operations.

Halk TV reports live broadcast interruption

In a message posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Halk TV stated that the police were inside the building and that the live broadcast had been cut. The channel also shared a video showing its editor-in-chief, Suat Toktas, speaking with the newly appointed administrator, who was sent by Turkish authorities.

Editor-in-chief calls the action illegal

Suat Toktas, Halk TV's editor-in-chief, reportedly told the administrator that the takeover was illegal. He expressed concern over the disruption of the live broadcast and the broader implications for press freedom in Turkey. The police are also conducting a search of the premises and are blocking employees from entering the building.

Opposition leader condemns the action

Özgür Özel, leader of the main opposition party, strongly criticized the move on X, calling it a tactic used by dictators. He lamented that such actions have now occurred in Turkey, highlighting the growing tension between the government and the media.

Recent media crackdown continues

This incident follows the recent blocking of T24, one of Turkey's most influential independent news websites. T24 was shut down two weeks earlier under the pretext of "LGBT propaganda," raising concerns about the government's increasing control over the media landscape.
