It is an Olympic year, but also an electoral year for winter international federations. Following the FIS (International Ski Federation), IBSF (International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation), FIL (International Luge Federation), and ISU (International Skating Union) in the spring, World Curling held its annual general meeting this weekend in Bratislava. Its members chose continuity by overwhelmingly voting for Beau Welling, who was re-elected as president with 75% of the votes against Australian Hugh Millikin. The American therefore enters a second term, with the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in the French Alps in 2030 as a highlight.
His first term was marked by the creation of a new visual identity, the launch of a streaming platform, and the creation of working groups on sustainable development and on diversity, equity, and inclusion. In his manifesto, he also notes that he has strengthened the voice of athletes, improved transparency and member engagement, developed commercial opportunities, and established strong relationships within the Olympic Movement.
"Having the trust of the World Curling family to continue for four more years means a lot to me," responded the president before the Assembly. "It is also a responsibility, but I am ready to take it on. I look forward to working with everyone to take advantage of the visibility provided by the success of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. I feel that curling has reached maturity and that we must make a big leap forward in the development of this sport in order to spread our mission and values around the world."
He cited five priority areas of work: strengthening the financial stability of World Curling, optimizing investments in development (by adapting the support provided to members and better pooling and mobilizing resources), improving access to the sport (by strategically increasing opportunities to practice curling), innovating during events, and strengthening the FI (Fédération Internationale) within the IOC (International Olympic Committee) ecosystem. The next elections will not be long in coming for the other international federations: the International Biathlon Union will vote during its Congress, from September 17 to 20, in Berchtesgaden (Germany), while the International Ice Hockey Federation will do so on October 2 in Tenerife (Spain).
