A 20-year-old Disney cast member, Matthew Eric Jenkins from Shelby Township, Michigan, died after being struck by lightning in Celebration, Florida—a town located near Walt Disney World. Jenkins was found unresponsive on Tuesday night following the incident, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office. He had moved to Florida just a week earlier to begin the Disney College Program, an internship opportunity for college students at Walt Disney World, as shared by his father to local news station WESH 2. The tragedy occurred as a group of people sought shelter on a walking path behind a hotel on Bloom Street during a severe storm. Witnesses reported seeing Jenkins collapse moments after the lightning strike. Felipe Costa, who was with the group, rushed to help Jenkins and mentioned that a woman nearby also performed CPR until emergency responders arrived. Jenkins was transported to Celebration Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Costa shared his emotional reaction to the incident, saying he felt a sense of foreboding and now has a greater appreciation for the power of nature and storms. He emphasized the importance of seeking shelter during severe weather. Jenkins’ father expressed gratitude to those who helped his son during the critical moments. According to Fox 35, a lightning strike was recorded around 6:25 p.m. that evening, which may have been the one that struck Jenkins before he collapsed. Detectives are waiting for the medical examiner’s report to determine the official cause of death. The Independent has reached out to Disney for a statement, but has not yet received a response.
