Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, is currently serving a 14-year prison sentence on corruption charges. His two sons, Kasim Khan and Sulaiman Khan, have accused Pakistan's army chief, Asim Munir, of a "personal vendetta" against their father, who has been incarcerated since 2023 at Adiala prison in Rawalpindi. The sons claim Khan is being "slowly killed" in prison and have not been allowed to visit or communicate with him for over six months. They have also faced difficulties traveling from the United Kingdom to Pakistan to advocate for his release. The Supreme Court of Pakistan is expected to rule on a case involving the government's alleged contempt of court. The case centers on the government allegedly violating a court order by denying Khan access to private hospital treatment for a worsening eye condition and by blocking family visits and communication for over six months. Khan is reportedly held in solitary confinement in a small cell, measuring 6ft by 8ft. His political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), plans a nationwide march later this month demanding his release. Speaking to the Guardian from London, the sons described their father’s prison conditions as "a form of mental and physical torture." They said Khan is locked in a small cell without human contact, has not been allowed new books, and has been denied visits from family or a neutral doctor. They mentioned Khan has an eye condition that may have led to the loss of sight in one eye and that he has been diagnosed with high blood pressure. The Pakistan Cricket Board, which has close ties to the government, formally complained to Sky Sports after an interview with the sons was aired during a test match between England and Pakistan. The Pakistani team threatened to refuse to return to the field after the lunch break. The sons criticized the government for attempting to silence media, calling it an "authoritarian regime." The UN has stated that Khan's prolonged detention violates international law, and the UN's special rapporteur on torture suggested his solitary confinement and detention conditions could amount to psychological torture. The government has denied these allegations, stating Khan is being kept in adequate conditions with access to home-cooked food, nuts, bottled water, exercise equipment, family visits, and regular medical examinations. Imran Khan came to power in 2018 with the backing of Pakistan's military, but was toppled in 2022 after falling out with his military benefactors. He was arrested and charged with more than 100 crimes, including alleged corruption and sedition, which he claims are trumped up to keep him out of power. Despite his imprisonment, Khan remains popular. The sons emphasized they have no interest in entering politics in Pakistan or leading Khan's PTI party in his absence. They also noted that while the establishment may believe they can act without repercussions, international coverage of Khan's case has rattled the government. Speculation about a potential deal with the military to secure Khan's release has been circulating, but the sons believe Khan would not compromise his political principles for his release.
