The National Football League (NFL) is holding its first regular-season game in Australia this Friday, with the Los Angeles Rams facing the San Francisco 49ers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The game, set for 10:35 am local time, is the first non-exhibition regular-season match in the country and is expected to attract around 100,000 spectators. More than half of the attendees are anticipated to be from outside Victoria or overseas. This event marks a significant step in the NFL's international expansion, which has previously held regular-season games in seven countries. The league plans to host a record nine international games in 2026. The MCG, one of the largest stadiums in the southern hemisphere, was selected after a deal was announced in February 2025 during Super Bowl week. The NFL has been broadcasting live games in Australia since 1995, and local interest has grown substantially in recent years. Since 2022, when the league prioritized global expansion, the number of NFL fans in Australia has nearly doubled, reaching 8.8 million—almost one in three of the population. The NFL has also invested in promoting flag football, a non-contact version of American football that will debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. In Australia, flag football has grown from 10 schools to over 500, and the NFL aims to help it secure a place at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. This game is the first of three scheduled to be held in Melbourne over the next four years, under a contract between the NFL and the state of Victoria. The state is reportedly paying up to A$15 million for the right to host the game but expects a significant return on investment, similar to Dublin’s tenfold return on its first NFL game in 2023. Almost 50% of the MCG tickets were purchased by fans from outside Victoria or overseas, meaning around 50,000 fans will travel to Melbourne for the event. Logistical challenges arise due to the 17-hour time difference between Melbourne and California, the longest travel time for an NFL regular-season game. Previously, the longest travel time was around 12 hours to Sao Paulo, Brazil. The 49ers arrived in Melbourne last Friday, while the Rams arrived the day before the game, following a similar schedule to last year’s game at Wembley. The early start time in Melbourne is unusual for the NFL but aligns with local sports traditions, such as cricket matches at the MCG. The game is also notable for the presence of Australian NFL players, including Jordan Mailata and Michael Dickson, who have played for the past two Super Bowl-winning teams. The NFL has committed to providing flag football kits to every school in Australia and has opened an academy on the Gold Coast to develop athletes with transferable skills from rugby, basketball, or Australian rules football. The league aims to create an international pipeline of players targeting both the Olympics and the NFL.
