A new social media platform named Tweet.app has launched as an alternative to X, the rebranded version of Twitter. Developed by Bluebird, Inc., this platform operates on a pay-only model and currently has around 8,000 users. The name "Tweet" was chosen after legal issues with X, which still holds trademark rights to the name "Twitter" because of its presence on the Apple App Store. Bluebird, Inc. President and General Counsel Stephen Coates explained that the company initially tried to cancel the "Tweet" and "Twitter" trademarks but faced a legal block from X, which led to the rebranding to Tweet.app.
Following a court ruling, Bluebird decided to move forward with the new name and has no plans to use the iconic Twitter bird logo, even though X's ownership of it is not strongly protected. The platform is using its users' fees to support its small team of 10 employees and contractors. It is also using artificial intelligence (AI) to help manage content, including a beta tool called Vera. This AI tool evaluates content for misinformation and assigns a score, allowing users to filter out content based on their preferred level of accuracy in the future.
Coates emphasized that Tweet.app will not aim to eliminate all fake news but instead follows a principle of "Freedom of speech but not freedom of reach." This means that while users can express themselves freely, the platform will manage how widely their content is seen. Additionally, users will have the ability to control the algorithm that determines what content they see, a concept that more established social media platforms have only recently begun to explore.
Coates believes that Tweet.app provides users with a unique opportunity to have more control over their social media experience, contrasting with the "town square" concept of other platforms, where content is more freely shared without user control. He sees potential for new platforms like Tweet.app to coexist with existing ones, suggesting that there is still room for innovation and diversity in the social media landscape.
