The Royal Mint has released a special series of collectable coins to mark 20 years of the musical Wicked on London’s West End. The 50p coin celebrates two decades since the show opened at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in September 2006. Over the years, the musical has been performed more than 7,500 times in London and has been seen by nearly 14 million people. The coin features iconic elements from the show, including Elphaba’s hat and broomstick, Glinda’s wand and shoes, the Grimmerie spellbook, a flying monkey, and the Wizard of Oz in his hot air balloon. The coins are available in various editions, starting at £19.50, with some designs incorporating color. The color scheme reflects the show’s signature green and pink palette, which plays a major role in the visual storytelling of Wicked. A gold edition of the coin has been made using recycled gold, and the Royal Mint plans to extend this eco-friendly approach to all collectable gold coins by the end of 2026. Each coin comes in packaging inspired by the London stage production, adding to the thematic experience for collectors. Tim Mulhall, head of fandom at The Royal Mint, said: “For millions of fans around the world, Wicked isn’t just a musical, it’s a story that stays with you long after the curtain falls. This collection lets fans hold a piece of that magic in their hands: a coin that captures the friendship, the flying broomsticks, and the unforgettable colors of Oz.” Whether you are a coin collector, a devoted theatergoer, or simply drawn to the story of Elphaba and Glinda, the coin offers a way to carry a little bit of that wonder with you, wherever you go. The musical Wicked explores the backstory of characters from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, focusing on the complex relationship between “Glinda the Good” and the “Wicked Witch of the West.” It shows how their differing paths and choices shape their destinies. A statement from Wicked London said: “We are proud to have Wicked immortalised on an official UK coin as part of our landmark anniversary, offering fans and collectors alike a magical opportunity to commemorate the date long after the curtain falls on the celebrations.” The coins will be available for purchase starting at 9am on September 17 from The Royal Mint’s website. In addition, the Mint announced that Wicked advent calendars will soon be released, with a color coin hidden behind door 24.
