Ferrari updates its car for the US Grand Prix

Ferrari is set to unveil a major aerodynamic upgrade to its SF-26 car during the United States Grand Prix in Austin, as reported by AutoRacer. This will be the fourth and final significant aerodynamic change for the car this season, focusing on improving performance and consistency.

New flat bottom design for more downforce

The primary change involves the car's flat bottom, which Ferrari has redesigned to generate more downforce. Engineers are also working to ensure this downforce remains stable even as the car's ride height changes due to movement, presenting a dual challenge of increasing aerodynamic load while maintaining balance.

Narrower side air intakes for better airflow

Ferrari plans to narrow the side air intakes to reduce their front bulk and direct airflow more effectively toward the flat bottom and rear of the car. Unlike some competitors, Ferrari will not excessively slope the sidepods, maintaining a balanced approach to aerodynamics.

Cooling system adjustments needed

The narrower air intakes will require modifications to the car's cooling system. Ferrari will adjust the bodywork shapes and the layout of outlets that release hot air. These changes are interconnected, as the efficiency of the new flat bottom depends on how air flows around the sidepods.

Final aerodynamic development for the SF-26

Austin will mark the last major aerodynamic update for the SF-26. After this, only minor adjustments based on track characteristics are expected. This final upgrade will help Ferrari test the accuracy of its simulations against the car's real-world performance.

Looking ahead to the 2027 project

Ferrari's engineers are already working on the 2027 car, which will differ significantly from the SF-26 despite retaining some chassis principles. A large portion of the budget will be allocated to engine development, signaling a focus on future performance improvements.

Competition and challenges ahead

Ferrari's last aerodynamic update may help the team finish the season more strongly. However, McLaren is also expected to introduce new parts in Austin to close the gap with its rivals. Andrea Stella, McLaren's director, has warned that these changes won't fully resolve the MCL40's handling issues, which will require deeper modifications in 2027.
