Andoni Iraola, the head coach of Liverpool, praised young player Lewis Koumas for his standout performance in Liverpool's 3-1 victory over Tottenham in the Carabao Cup third-round match. Koumas, who was deployed as a center-forward, led the line alongside key players like Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo, and Dominik Szoboszlai. The 20-year-old, making only his fifth appearance for the club, was named man-of-the-match and played a crucial role in the win. Koumas, the son of former Tranmere and West Brom midfielder Jason, was given the opportunity as the team's £125 million British record signing, Alexander Isak, rested on the bench. During his 86 minutes on the field, Koumas consistently posed a threat to Tottenham's defense. Iraola made 10 changes from Liverpool's previous match, a goalless draw against Fulham, and expressed satisfaction with the energy and effort from his younger players. He noted that some substitutes, like 19-year-old midfielder Trey Nyoni and 22-year-old James McConnell, had to be taken off due to fatigue, but their contributions were valuable. "They have been very athletic, with willingness to win their duels and make their presence felt," Iraola said. He specifically highlighted Koumas, emphasizing his training attitude and contagious energy. "When you see the runs up front, giving everything, you are kind of forced to go behind and use the same intensity levels," he added. The victory was sealed in the final moments by Dominik Szoboszlai, who scored a stunning goal after Conor Gallagher had pulled one back. Goals from Mac Allister and Gakpo had already put Liverpool 2-0 up. Iraola acknowledged the need for fresh legs, stating that the changes were necessary to restore energy after a lackluster performance in the previous match. He praised the team's overall intensity and aggressiveness, expressing confidence that they had earned the right to progress to the next round of the competition. Tottenham's head coach, Roberto De Zerbi, acknowledged the need for improvement after his team's first goal of the Premier League season. Although they managed to score, De Zerbi felt they missed key chances and needed to be more clinical in front of goal. "We have to shoot more times and we have to shoot better and we have to finish better the clear situations," he said, expressing disappointment with the result. Despite the loss, he remained confident in his players, saying, "I believe in my players... when we arrive to finally click to win a game, we will enjoy it with these players."
