A vehicle was set on fire at the gates of Émile Zola high school in Wattrelos, in the Nord department of France, just before classes began on Wednesday, September 30 at 8 o'clock. According to reports, the vehicle was projected onto the gates and set on fire by a person wearing a hood. A video obtained by local media shows the black vehicle burning, with students from the school filming the scene from a safe distance. The prosecutor of Lille, Samuel Finielz, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation has been launched for "destruction by a means dangerous to persons," assigned to the local judicial police service in Roubaix. The high school was not affected by the school blockades that took place across the region on Wednesday. However, according to the Voix du Nord newspaper, other high schools in the surrounding area, such as in Roubaix, were affected by similar incidents, including garbage bins set on fire in front of the gate of Jean-Moulin high school. Due to the fire at Émile Zola high school, the institution had to be closed, and students were sent home. The prosecutor of Lille noted that it is still unclear whether the vehicle "crashed into the gates and was set on fire afterwards" or whether it "was parked in front of the gates and set on fire." According to a student interviewed by BFMTV, who witnessed the event and wished to remain anonymous, the vehicle "crashed" into the gates. Initial reports suggest that a person wearing a hooded garment set fire to the vehicle after stopping it against the gates. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
