Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the co-owners of Wrexham AFC, have purchased the historic Turf Hotel, a pub located next to the club's home stadium, the Racecourse Ground. The move is intended to "protect the future of the club" and preserve the pub's historical significance. Wrexham AFC, founded in October 1864, is the oldest football club in Wales, and the Turf Hotel has long been associated with the club's legacy. The acquisition was announced by the club, which stated that bringing the pub, the stadium, and the club under one ownership will help "protect the historic pub" and ensure its continued role in the community. The Turf Hotel has become a familiar sight in the popular Disney documentary series "Welcome to Wrexham," which follows the lives of Reynolds and McElhenney as they run the football club. The pub's current landlord, Wayne Jones, has been managing The Turf for 20 years and described the purchase as "great news for all Wrexham fans." Since Reynolds and McElhenney took over the club in 2021, celebrities such as Paul Rudd, Channing Tatum, and Will Ferrell have been spotted visiting the pub. In 2024, Prince William even joined McElhenney behind the bar to pull a pint on St David's Day, Wales's national day. The club emphasized that the acquisition will help preserve the Turf Hotel's history and traditions, which are deeply tied to the Racecourse Ground and Wrexham AFC since the club's founding. The statement noted that the purchase will allow for improvements to the fan experience, including enhancements to the fan zone near the pub on Mold Road. The move aligns with the club's ongoing strategy to safeguard its future by securing key areas connected to its identity and operations. Wayne Jones, the pub's landlord, highlighted the Turf Hotel's historical role in the club's story, noting that it predates the club and was likely where the team was founded. He mentioned that players used to change in the pub before matches as recently as the 1940s. Jones will continue managing the pub and is excited about sharing its unique blend of history, atmosphere, and celebrity visits with future fans. The Racecourse Ground, which hosted its first Wales international match in 1877, remains the world's oldest football stadium still in use for international games. Eric Allyn, representing the Allyn family, who invested in the club in 2024, stated that bringing The Turf into the ownership group ensures its long-term future and preserves its historical connection to the club and the community.
