Sony launches the WH-1000XM4C, a redesigned noise-canceling headphone with compliance to new EU battery laws, but with some trade-offs in battery life and modern features.
Revised model launched in 2026
The Sony WH-1000XM4C, a revised version of the popular WH-1000XM4, was launched in September 2026 at a price of 250 €, matching the previous price of its predecessor before it became unavailable.Compliance with European regulations
The XM4C is designed to comply with upcoming European regulations regarding replaceable batteries, which are expected to be in effect by 2027. Due to integration constraints, the XM4C features a smaller battery, resulting in a reduction of 3 to 5 hours of battery life depending on the noise cancellation mode.Design and structural changes
The XM4C retains the structure, QN1 noise cancellation processor, and microphones of the WH-1000XM4, along with some adjustments such as a tonal adjustment inherited from the WH-1000XM6, a Bluetooth 6.0 receiver, and a 10-band equalizer. The NFC pairing feature has been omitted.Improved design and aesthetics
The XM4C includes a few design changes for improved readability and simplicity, such as moving the left/right indicators inside the ear cups and adding more explicit button labels. The product name is no longer displayed near the headband, and a silver Sony logo replaces the previous copper one. The NFC logo, previously on the left casing, has also been removed.User interface and controls
The XM4C introduces Quick Access, allowing quick access to streaming services via buttons, and a touch interface on the right ear cup for managing playback, track changes, and volume adjustments. However, this interface can cause unintended commands during handling, which can be disabled through the Sony Sound Connect app.Connectivity and limitations
The XM4C retains the same Bluetooth connectivity capabilities as the original XM4, with the upgrade from Bluetooth 5.0 to 6.0, but it still supports the same codecs: SBC, AAC, and LDAC. The absence of the LE Audio standard is a drawback, as it would have reduced the Bluetooth latency, which is currently measured at 220 ms, too high for gaming.Software features and updates
The Sony Sound Connect app provides a comprehensive set of features, although its menus can be confusing. The XM4C benefits from numerous software updates and includes options inherited from newer Sony models, such as a 10-band equalizer, Quick Access customization, and a wind noise reduction mode.Sound quality and performance
The XM4C's sound quality has been improved with a revised tonal adjustment inspired by the XM6, resulting in a more balanced and natural sound with enhanced mid-range frequencies. However, it can be overly bass-heavy on certain mixes and lacks the refined balance of the XM6.Battery life and usability
The XM4C's battery life is estimated at 27 hours with noise cancellation and 34 hours without, although tests suggest it can last slightly longer. The absence of visible battery compartments and detachable ear cushions makes battery replacement difficult for users.Overall evaluation and market position
Despite its dated features, the XM4C remains a highly effective and comfortable headphone with strong noise cancellation and a natural sound signature, though it faces competition from more modern models at higher prices.
