Celtic have finalized the loan signing of Danish midfielder Oliver Sorensen from Italian club Parma, adding to their ongoing efforts to strengthen their squad ahead of the Europa League. Assistant manager Shaun Maloney had previously hinted that the Scottish champions were targeting up to four new players before finalizing their European campaign squad by Wednesday. Sorensen, 24, will spend the season with Celtic, with the club holding an option to buy him permanently. He joined Parma in August 2025 after five years at Midtjylland in Denmark. This marks Celtic’s fourth first-team signing of the transfer window, with links also emerging to Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and PSV Eindhoven midfielder Joel van den Berg. Maloney emphasized the need for additional depth in key positions, particularly in defense, where Scotland international Kieran Tierney is currently the sole left-back. He also mentioned that Japan midfielder Reo Hatate, who has scored 33 goals in 191 appearances for Celtic since joining in 2022, could potentially leave the club. Sorensen’s arrival is expected to help fill the void left by the departure of Arne Engels to West Ham United. “There’s some key positions that we still need a bit of work on in the next couple of days,” Maloney said before Celtic’s match against Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership. “We need that slightly different profile, which we need in certain games.” When asked about the possibility of signing 18-year-old Chelsea forward Shim Mheuka on loan, Maloney said it was difficult to comment on potential transfers, as nothing had been confirmed. He added that any new signings in the striker position would either happen soon or the club would proceed with its current squad. On Hatate, Maloney praised the player’s contributions, noting that he had won multiple titles with the club. “If he does move on, he’ll remember how good a player he was for this club,” Maloney said. The Scottish transfer deadline is set for Thursday at 17:00 BST, with the Europa League squad needing to be finalized by Wednesday at 23:59. Maloney said the club aimed to strengthen the squad, particularly for European competition, adding that they were targeting three or four key positions. “If there’s more than that, the thinking of the club will be for the future,” he explained, highlighting the balance between immediate needs and long-term planning.
