OpenAI has completed a major fundraising round, with Nvidia and SoftBank each making their final installment of 10 billion dollars (approximately 9 billion euros) on October 1st, according to The Information. SoftBank confirmed this in a statement, while Nvidia's payment is based on an anonymous source. Along with Amazon, these three companies have contributed approximately 90% of the funds raised by OpenAI, making them its main shareholders. For two of them, they are also suppliers of chips and servers. This could be seen as a new round of investment. In fact, these are the final payments of the round officially announced by OpenAI on March 31st: 122 billion dollars (approximately 108 billion euros) of "committed capital," for a valuation of 852 billion dollars.
SoftBank divided its 30 billion dollars into three installments, on April 1st, July 1st, and October 1st. The last payment was made on credit, through the issuance of 11.1 billion dollars in bonds. Therefore, six months passed between the announcement and the money being on the account. For comparison, Microsoft had invested 10 billion dollars in OpenAI in 2023. The company then raised 6.6 billion in 2024. In March 2025, it was valued at 300 billion dollars. It is now valued almost three times more.
Nvidia invested 30 billion dollars (approximately 27 billion euros) in OpenAI. A significant portion of this money is likely to return to Nvidia. OpenAI states in its statement that its models are trained on Nvidia GPUs. Most of its inference servers (those that produce ChatGPT responses) are also equipped with them. To go further, 120 billion in profit: Nvidia is no longer a GPU company, it is a bank. Nvidia had even planned for more. In September 2025, the chipmaker mentioned up to 100 billion dollars, paid gradually as OpenAI installed data centers equipped with its chips. This project never went beyond the letter of intent, and the 30 billion dollars replaced it in February.
Amazon is doing the same with its cloud. In addition to its 50 billion dollars (approximately 44 billion euros) of investment, OpenAI committed in February to spend an additional 100 billion dollars over eight years at AWS, Amazon's cloud division. The contract also includes 2 gigawatts of Trainium chips, designed by Amazon to compete with Nvidia. This represents approximately the power of two nuclear reactors. SoftBank has neither chips nor cloud to sell. The Japanese group has invested a total of 64.6 billion dollars in OpenAI, giving it approximately 13% of the shares. OpenAI also cites it among its partners for building data centers.
Three companies for 90% of the fundraising. Nvidia, SoftBank, and Amazon have contributed approximately 110 billion dollars out of 122. Microsoft remains in the capital, and a dozen funds complete the round. However, only three companies possess both a significant share of OpenAI, a part of its chips, and a part of its hosting. Therefore, the choices OpenAI makes regarding its suppliers or its pricing could depend on the interests of its shareholders. OpenAI claims 2 billion dollars in monthly revenue, without stating how much it spends. At its rival, Anthropic spends nearly three dollars for every dollar earned. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has even asked the industry to slow down, and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has approved. In Europe, Mistral AI raised 3 billion euros on September 8th, the largest fundraising ever achieved by a non-listed European tech company. It values the company at approximately 21 billion euros. The March round of OpenAI alone represents 36 times this amount.
