In the early hours of Saturday, September 26, around 1 a.m., three people in Grammont Park in Pont-de-Chéruy, Isère, heard screams and found a man striking a woman who was lying on a bench. According to Le Dauphiné libéré, the three witnesses tried to intervene before both the man and the woman fell to the ground. Gendarmes were called to the scene and arrested the man, a 33-year-old local who was too drunk to stand. The man, who had a prior conviction for violent behavior, spent a day in a detox cell before explaining that he had been in an exclusively sexual relationship with the victim for years. The pair had spent the evening at a mutual friend's house and consumed a significant amount of alcohol, including vodka. On their way back, the man encountered the trio, whom he also knew, and became angry, pushing the woman onto the bench and hitting her multiple times in the face. The accused was judged in immediate proceedings on Wednesday, September 30, before the judicial court of Vienne. He admitted to being "much more drunk than her" and having no memory of the evening, stating he was "completely unconscious" and "could not even stand up." He expressed shame, saying, "I am ashamed because it is my friend. I have a real alcohol problem." The prosecutor requested 18 months in prison and the revocation of six months of probation. The defense requested that the aggravating circumstance of violence against a spouse not be considered, as the penal code implies cohabitation. The defense emphasized that their client "admits to the violence in the face of the evidence" and does not minimize the seriousness of his behavior that night. The court ultimately sentenced him to ten months in prison, with continued detention.
