A two-part documentary series on ITV has revisited the unsolved murder of Carol Morgan, which took place in 1981. Carol, a 36-year-old convenience store owner, was found brutally murdered in the stockroom of her shop in Linslade, Bedfordshire. The killer used an axe or machete to attack her before stealing £435 in cash and 1,400 cigarettes. At the time of the murder, Carol’s husband, Allen Morgan, was at a cinema with their two children. The police initially treated the case as a robbery gone wrong and did not formally question Allen or his mistress, Margaret Spooner, under caution. This early handling of the case has since been criticized for overlooking key clues and possible motives. The case was revisited in 2018, with investigators re-examining all existing evidence. Former Detective Superintendent Carl Foster, who was the senior investigating officer, noted that the team had to rely on traditional detective work since forensic science had not provided new breakthroughs. Investigators focused on long-ignored questions, such as why Allen used a neighbor’s phone to report the murder and why he sold the shop and married his mistress shortly afterward. These actions raised suspicions about his involvement, though they were not pursued at the time. A new piece of evidence emerged in 2024 when a woman named Jane Bunting, who was a teenager at the time of the murder, recalled that Allen had asked her if her ex-boyfriend knew anyone who could kill. This recollection played a key role in the case being reopened. Allen was eventually found guilty of hiring a hitman to murder his former wife. His current wife, Margaret, was found not guilty of the same charge. Allen was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 22 years. Foster expressed hope that Allen would one day reveal the name of the person he hired to kill his wife and acknowledged the emotional impact on Carol’s biological children, who now must come to terms with the fact that their father murdered their mother. The documentary, titled The Real Unforgotten, explores the twists and failures in the investigation and is now available to stream on Netflix. It offers a detailed look at the tragic case and the justice system's long journey to uncover the truth behind Carol Morgan’s murder.
