Jon Watts, the director behind the Spider-Man trilogy featuring Tom Holland, is reportedly in discussions to direct the first film of a new Star Wars trilogy, according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter and Daniel Richtman. The project, written by Simon Kinberg, is said to continue the Skywalker saga, a storyline that has spanned nine films over decades. The upcoming film could unofficially be labeled Episode X, with Rey Skywalker, played by Daisy Ridley, possibly appearing in the story. However, Lucasfilm has not officially confirmed the project, and Disney has not yet given formal approval. Watts, who previously co-created and directed episodes of the Star Wars series Skeleton Crew, is familiar with the franchise. He has directed several films, including Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, as well as the 2024 film Wolfs. The new Star Wars trilogy is reportedly further along in development compared to most other Star Wars projects, though it is still behind Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and set for release on May 27, 2027. Details about the project remain largely unconfirmed, with the film's plot and title still unknown. Some reports suggested the new trilogy would continue the Skywalker saga, while others indicated it might explore a new storyline. The Hollywood Reporter recently noted that Kinberg has chosen to continue the saga, though the project is still in its early stages. Kathleen Kennedy, former head of Lucasfilm, mentioned in an interview with Deadline that Kinberg's script was reviewed in August and required revisions, with a detailed treatment completed in early 2024. The project is said to be gaining momentum, though official approval from Disney remains pending. The Star Wars franchise has had mixed critical and commercial success in recent years, with The Rise of Skywalker (2019) receiving disappointing reviews. However, television series such as Andor and Skeleton Crew have been well-received, showing that the franchise is exploring new storytelling approaches. Other projects, including Maul - Shadow Lord and Ahsoka, are in development, with future seasons scheduled for release.
