The miniseries East of Eden, starring Florence Pugh, has been available on Netflix since October 1st and is currently the most viewed series worldwide on the platform. However, initial audience figures from the past week suggest that its success may be somewhat misleading. While it holds the top position in Netflix's rankings, the series has accumulated a total of 6.5 million views, or approximately 45.5 million hours watched. According to Deadline, this represents the weakest start for a Netflix production since March. For comparison, other historical miniseries such as At the Edge of the American Dream and All the Light We Cannot See totaled about 10 million views for their first week. Another notable statistic is the 200% increase in sales of John Steinbeck's novel, which the miniseries is based on. It is also worth noting that Netflix's primary objective with this adaptation may have been to qualify for upcoming Golden Globe and Emmy Awards, as the program was designed as a miniseries with a single season and its renewal is unlikely to be influenced by audience numbers. The series creator, Zoe Kazan, is set to work on an adaptation of another classic of American literature: Lonesome Dove, a multi-volume novel by Jim McMurtry. This novel is regularly cited as one of the main references for the series Yellowstone, and particularly for its prequel 1883. Florence Pugh, who appeared in the cast of Spider-Man: Brand New Day this summer, is set to appear in two of the biggest blockbusters expected this year: Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday, both scheduled for release in December. In the meantime, there is anticipation regarding whether her name will appear on the list of nominations for the upcoming Golden Globe Awards. The miniseries East of Eden is now available exclusively on Netflix.
