Controversial film returns with a sequel

Twenty-two years ago, Mel Gibson unveiled the film that would become one of the most controversial works in cinematic history: The Passion of the Christ. With a budget of 30 million dollars, the film starring Jim Caviezel, Monica Bellucci, Maia Morgenstern, and Christo Jivkov earned 610 million dollars internationally.

New project with a larger budget

Following the global success of his film, the director, screenwriter, and producer returns behind the camera for an ambitious sequel: The Resurrection of Christ, which will be released in two parts. Metropolitan FilmExport reveals today the release dates of this ambitious project, with a budget approaching 200 million dollars.

Delayed release with a one-year gap

Originally planned to be released within a few weeks of each other, the two parts of The Resurrection of Christ will finally be released with a one-year gap: the first part is expected on May 5, 2027, while the second will arrive in French cinemas on May 24, 2028, two dates chosen in reference to the Ascension. A calendar change that significantly modifies the original schedule, as the two films were previously scheduled to be released in 2027, within a few weeks of each other.

New cast members for the sequel

Casting change: The Resurrection of Christ is carried by the Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen, who takes on the role of Jesus of Nazareth, previously played by Jim Caviezel, the Cuban actress Mariela Garriga, who replaces Monica Bellucci in the role of Mary Magdalene, and Kasia Smutniak, who lends her features to Mary, the mother of Jesus, a role played in 2004 by Maia Morgenstern. Pier Luigi Pasino will play Peter, Riccardo Scamarcio will lend his features to the Roman procurator Pontius Pilate, while Rupert Everett joins the cast in an unspecified role for now. Mel Gibson has chosen to hire new actors instead of rejuvenating the actors from the original film using artificial intelligence. A process that would have been too expensive.

Mystery surrounding the screenplay

The screenplay remains a secret, but it is known that the film will continue directly after the end of the first, which ended with the crucifixion of Christ. However, do not expect a simple interpretation... In July 2023, Mel Gibson referred to his film as "an acid trip" and "super ambitious," including the fall of angels and the descent of Christ to hell as part of his spiritual journey.
